Create a delicious Make Your Own Sundae Bar with an extra surprise, embossed sugar cookies! Gather your favorite ice cream toppings, a Mason jar (or two!) and bake some attention-grabbing patterned sugar cookies. In our family, there’s a mad-dash to get the first sugar cookie. There’s excitement and giggles as family, friends, and little-ones choose their favorite embossed pattern and get their first taste of delicious cookies.

Make Your Sugar Cookie Dough

Add Ingredients

Start by making sugar cookie dough. The key to a good sugar cookie dough is to use quality, softened butter. Mix the butter and sugar together until it’s a little fluffy and covered in sugar. Add the egg and mix together. Add vanilla to taste and mix until combined. To make your sugar cookies extra tasty, add a little more vanilla. It makes the kitchen smell wonderful and adds extra flavor to your dessert!

Add flour and salt to your sugar mixer and mix together. It’s best to add the flour in small batches to avoid the ominous cloud of flour and mess all over the counter. When making embossed cookies, it’s important not to add extra rising agents, like baking powder, as they will add problems later when baking your patterned cookies.

Package Your Dough

After you’ve finished mixing your delicious dough, separate the dough into 3-4 smaller packages and put in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours before rolling out your cookies.

Make The Mason Jar Ice Cream

Make Ice Cream

While your sugar cookie dough is chilling, make your Mason jar ice cream. Pick your favorite wide mouth Mason jar (makes for easier ice cream scooping later!) and fill halfway with whipping cream and add vanilla and sugar. Top your jar with a reCAP wide mouth POUR Mason jar lid and shake for 5 minutes. You’re done mixing your ice cream when the whipping cream has doubled in size. Wrap a wet paper towel around the Mason jar and place in the freezer for 2-3 hours.

Tip: Flip open the flipper on the POUR Mason jar lid occasionally to check how your ice cream is coming along while shaking and how it’s freezing.

Time To Roll Out The Cookies

Emboss Cookies

With the ice cream in freezer, it’s time to roll out and decorate your cookies! It’s best to work with chilled dough to get an even roll and help prevent the dough from sticking to the rolling pins.

Roll out your sugar cookie dough using a standard rolling pin, ensuring the dough is evenly rolled out. Add flour to the top of your flattened dough and to the embossing rolling pin. Starting at one end of the flattened dough and pressing firmly, roll the patterned rolling pin across the dough. Only roll forward with the patterned rolling pin to keep the pattern uniform.

Cut out the cookies with your favorite cookie cutter and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Once the cookies are nicely chilled, put in the oven and bake for 5-8 minutes. Once lightly brown on the bottom, place on a cooling rack.
